Our story

Born when everything stood still

A worker seen from behind, in a long-sleeved Chiquetazo Mezcal shirt, lifting an agave piña above his head among piles of piñas.

Chiquetazo means a blow: a hard knock, a hell of a hit. The brand was born in pandemic times, when everything was dead, in an era of grinding every single day and taking life's punches.

100% Agave

Pure agave, just as the label states.

Double-Distilled

All three mezcals are distilled twice.

Artisanal Mezcal

Agave harvested by hand, in the field.

Oaxacan Connection

Above all, with Santiago Matatlán.

Our craft

From the harvest to the jícara

We produce, bottle and sell our own mezcal. These are the steps between the agave and your jícara.

  1. A man in a hat cutting the leaves off an agave with a machete out in the field; the trimmed heart lies at his feet.

    Jima (harvest)

The agave is cut by hand in the field, stripping the leaves until only the piña, the heart of the plant, remains.

  2. A man standing on a mound of split agave hearts, wrapped in the white smoke rising around them.

    Roasting

The piñas are roasted before going to the mill.

  3. A white horse in harness with a colourful blanket, beside the round mill pit full of crushed agave.

    Milling

The roasted agave is milled to release its fibres and juices, ready to ferment.

  4. A young man raising a machete over the mill pit full of cooked agave; behind him, the wooden vats under a metal roof.

    Fermentation

    The juices ferment in vats.

  5. Hands holding a metal cup under the thin stream of mezcal, with the pearls forming on the surface.

    Double distillation

The mezcal is distilled twice. Poured into a jícara, it forms pearls.
